in december of 1969 the young lords party, a revolutionary group based in east harlem/el barrio, took over the first spanish methodist church demanding space to hold programs to provide breakfast to the neighborhood children, free clothes and political education. the occupation came after several attempts to request that the space be used more than the two-days-a-week when services were held, and for the evident lack of community space. takeover (bis) reinterprets this action with the intention to connect the struggles of then and now and to bring this part of history back to the site of the church and those around it. four activists and one poet were invited to explore how this may happen today, using their own experiences as a point of departure. with una osato, fernando reals, karina hurtado, scarlet spence + jesus papoleto melendez.
