Oscar our Mandela

Oscar our Mandela

Franchesca Guzman and Oscar López RiveraOscar our Mandela – fought for our freedom so they took his away – imprisoned him in a cold cement cell in hopes to distinguish his resistant flames

Those flames of resistance which has touched so many lives, the espiritu of the movement – because of those flames – does not cease but thrives

Oscar our Mandela – has lived his life in captivity to allow his thoughts to remain free – refused to condone his own beliefs, even when the outside was so close, to their denouncements he would not agree

To the United States a dangerous, seditious conspiring mind – to patriotas worldwide an intense, intelligent, ambitious hero – sublime

Oscar our Mandela – embodies Pedro Albizu Campos in multifaceted ways – and like ‘El Maestro’ holds steadfast, refusing to be lead astray

It is our time to follow the contours of his historical trail, without losing sight of the successes to come, creating opportunities when the world thinks we will fail

Oscar our Mandela – we are fighting to bring you home – fighting, shouting, educating those who don’t know your story and doing together what we can’t do alone

Why Our People Never Prosper

Divided we stand conquered we will fall
Have allowed those who colonized us to be our all

Crabs in a barrel is our dynamics of choice and as long as that stands we will not have a voice

When we are united we are powerful and that they know – is why in the 70s they infiltrated our activists with co-intel-pro

Our bloodlines are filled with warriors, chiefs, explorers, and conquerors with zest – So why do we allow our oppressors to make us believe that our bloodline is not best

We’ve made songs to describe our Achilles heel – Can’t describe in adequate words how hearing “quitate tu pa’ ponerme yo” feels

From books our history has been stolen so they can tell us how to act – meanwhile also deciding for us which facts are fact

When we can’t even agree, some can’t even see, the heroism in Oscar – is the answer to the question why our people never prosper
